May 28 25 76 Annual Water Quality Report for 2024 Public Water Supply ID 3503627 INTRODUCTION ARE THERE CONTAMINANTS IN OUR DRINKING WATER To comply with State and Federal regula ons Village of Kiryas Joel will be annually issuing a report describing the quality of your drinking water The purpose of this report is to raise your understanding of drinking water and awareness of the need to protect our drinking water sources Last year and in previous years we conducted tests for over 109 contaminants We detected 14 of those contaminants This report provides an overview of last year s water quality Included are details about where your water comes from what it contains and how it compares to State standards As the State regula ons require we rou nely test your drinking water for numerous contaminants These contaminants include total coliform turbidity inorganic compounds nitrate nitrite lead and copper vola le organic compounds total trihalomethanes haloace c acids radiological and synthe c organic compounds The table presented below depicts which compounds were detected in your drinking water The State allows us to test for some contaminants less than once per year because the concentra ons of these contaminants do not change frequently Some of our data though representa ve are more than one year old If you have any ques ons about this report or concerning your drinking water please contact Mr Jacob Gluck at the Village of Kiryas Joel Water Department at 845 7838300 extension 270 or the Orange County Department of Health at 845 291 2331 We want you to be informed about your drinking water If you want to learn more please a end any of our regularly scheduled village board mee ngs The mee ngs are held the rt Tuesday of each month at 9 30 am in the village hall WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM In general the sources of drinking water both tap water and bo led water include rivers lakes streams ponds reservoirs springs and wells As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and in some cases radioac ve material and can pick up substances resul ng from the presence of animals or from human ac vi es Contaminants that may be present in source water include microbial contaminants inorganic contaminants pes cides and herbicides organic chemical contaminants and radioac ve contaminants In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink the State and the EPA prescribe regula ons which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems The State Health Department s and the FDA s regula ons establish limits for contaminants in bo led water which must provide the same protec on for public health Our water source is groundwater wells groundwater drawn from thirteen 46 500 feet drilled wells plus two standby emergency wells The water is pumped from the wells to ve treatment facili es Two of the treatment facili es treat the water by chlorine and potassium permanganate addi on to enhance the iron removal process as it passes through greensand lters and for disinfec on purposes The third treatment facility treats the water by caus c phosphate and chlorine addi on for the purpose of corrosion control iron sequestering and disinfec on prior to distribu on The fourth treatment facility treats the water by ltra on followed by chlorine addi on and UV for the purpose of disinfec on prior to distribu on The h treatment facility treats the water with chlorine for the purpose of disinfec on prior to distribu on During 2024 our system did not experience any restric on of our water source In addi on to our groundwater well sources we have a permanent interconnec on with the Town of New Windsor Commiunity Water Supply During 2024 this interconnec on provided approximately 500 000 gallons per day Please see a ached Town of New Windsor Annula Water Quality Report As men oned before our water is derived from 13 drilled wells and two standby emergency wells The source water assessments has rated these wells as having a medium high to very high suscep bility to microbials nitrates industrial solvents and other industrial contaminants These ra ngs are due primarily to the close proximity of SPDES permi ed discharge facili es industrial commercial facili es that discharge wastewater into the environment and are regulated by the state and or federal government and the low level residen al ac vity that are located in the assessment area In addi on the wells draw from con ned aquifers with the es mated recharge area within the selected me of travel and may not provide adequate protec on from poten al contamina on While the source water assessment rates our well as being suscep ble to microbials please note that our water is disinfected to ensure that the nished water delivered into your home meets New York State s drinking water standards for microbial contamina on FACTS AND FIGURES Our water system serves 46 475 people through 8 253 service connec ons The total water produced in 2024 was 864 2 million gallons The daily average of water treated and pumped into the distribu on system was 2 367 862 gallons per day Our highest single day was 3 063 400 gallons The amount of water delivered to customers was 823 4 million gallons This leaves an unaccounted amount of 118 thousand gallons a day This water was used to ush mains ght res and leakage accounts for the remaining 408 4 million gallons In 2024 water customers were charged 4 75 per 1 000 gallons of water It should be noted that all learned through our tes ng that some contaminants have been detected however these contaminants were detected below New York State requirements Although Arsenic was detected above the MCL it did not trigger a viola on Compliance for arsenic is based on a running annual average The running annual average for arsenic is in compliance with the EPA s MCL It should be noted that the ac on level for especially pregnant people infants both formula fed and breas ed and young children Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and parts used in service lines and in home plumbing Village of Kiryas Joel is responsible for providing high quality drinking water and removing lead pipes but cannot control the variety of materials used in the plumbing in your home Because lead levels may vary
